Happy Winter!

Hii y'all,

Happy Winter!!! This is my favorite time of the year, and I get to experience a real, true winter in the freezing temperatures of New York City :-) Yes this is very different from a California "winter" hahaha. But there are lots of fun things to enjoy, even admist the icy winds, and as the snow begins, it's a beautiful season :-) I absolutely LOVE the holiday spirit and feeling of this time of year :-)

I hope that wherever you are, and no matter what you are doing, that you are warm and cozy, cuddled up to someone special, spending time with friends and family, drinking hot chocolate, shopping admist lit trees and tons of decorations, listening to the holiday music all around you, warming your hands by a fireplace, being extra joyful and merry, and if you are near snow, then enjoying snow activities like skiing, snowboarding, and building a snowman or snowwoman :-)

History & Change

History has been made, and it is happening all around you. If you voted, you contributed to be a part of that history. Yes it is amazing, especially when you hear Reverend Jesse Jackson share his story of how he stood on stage when Martin Luther King was shot, and now he is here to see our nation's first African American president.

However, the vote is now over. The hype will fade away. And the hard work begins for President Barack Obama. And if you haven't realized this from history, one single person - alone, even the president, cannot change a nation. Yes one person can bring about change and make a difference. People like Gandhi, Mother Teresa, Rosa Parks, Martin Luther King - none of whom were president. And even while one person - like these individuals - can make a difference, they cannot change the lives of all individuals of a nation, or in the world.

We wait for a leader who will bring about change, when we can be leaders ourselves, as individuals, and bring about change in every moment of our lives. Why are we waiting for someone? If you keep waiting, you will be waiting your entire life and never see the change that you wish to see. 

As Gandhi said, "You must be the change that you wish to see in the world."

So start today and as an individual, work towards the change you wish to see in the world, in your life, and in the lives of others. Do not base all of your hopes and dreams on one person, whose main concern is to protect this nation, and cannot fix the lives of every individual in this country. Instead, use him as an inspiration to take action yourself, in every aspect of your life. You are responsible for your own life, dreams, and the power to help, heal, and bring about change, for yourself and for others as well.

Do not depend on this one person, or on anyone else. Depend on yourself. If he contributes to the changes that you already make for yourself and your life, all the better. But do not wait for one person to change your life or other people's lives or this nation. If some things happen and get better - that's great - but don't wait for it, and don't rely on someone else. Rely on yourself. Look not to the president to change your life. Look inside yourself. And start there.

Have faith in yourself. Anything is possible. Work hard. And believe.

I've realized that throughout life, when something makes us laugh, or really excited, or happy about any small or big thing, we think of things we want to try, places we want to go, see, experience - and we want to share all of these things with the people that we are closest with and to - our friends, family, and that romantic special someone ~ these are all the people that we love the most. It's like we think of them first, and there are a special few out of all of these people, whom we think of first to share it all with :-) whether that's your BFF or your soulmate <3

Spontaneous surprises

So yesterday, Mohit and I went to the grocery store to get some food. We wanted pizza :-) We were both starving after work for me and class for him, and they were cleaning the floors in front of the freezer area where the pizza was. So we patiently waited and walked around. There was this random bin of sports balls, like basketballs and football. So in the middle of this empty store, at like midnight, we are tossing the football and playing keep away with the basketball.

I love spontaneous surprises in life - things you don't plan - but just happen. And I remember thinking "here I am playing sports at midnight in the middle of an empty grocery store while we wait for the pizza aisle to be mopped up. This is fabulous!"

9/11 in New York City

Today is the 7th anniversary of the attack on the World Trade Center on September 11, 2001. There was a big memorial event today, where all the victims names were read, and all the countries of the world were represented. Mohit and I went to Ground Zero to say a prayer, but didn't know about the memorial that was earlier in the day. One woman who had lived through the attacks told us about the memorial and showed us some pictures that she had taken with her phone. Her office building overlooks the site. She had been right there when the planes had crashed on that day. Hearing her story was intense, and the entire experience of being there on this day and saying a prayer, was overwhelming for both of us. What a difference to be here in this city on the anniversary of the attacks.

Prayers for humanity. Hope for peace. Love shall conquer all.

David Cook is the new American Idol!!!

I'm SO HAPPY AND EXCITED!!!!!!!!
Since auditions and Hollywood week, I had my eyes, ears, and heart on David Cook. He was my favorite since day 1 all the way to the finale today, where he won by a landslide 12 million votes, and deserved it more than anyone else! Not only is he mature and versatile in his singing and demeanor, he seems most ready to take on the tough music industry and really record an amazing album. I LOVE how he can turn any song into a rock rendition, and is a total rockstar, inside and out. And when I saw him go from singing Mariah Carey (his rendition of my all time favorite Mariah song "Always Be My Baby" is the ringtone on my cell phone) to The Turtles to Lionel Richie to Michael Jackson to Phantom of the Opera, I knew that his vocal range and diversity in song choice and arrangement made him the best contestant to win Idol. And I just love him since the beginning and have been voting weekly for him to stay in - and now he's won! My favorite thing about him is how he picks songs and bands that aren't the most popular, that not everyone knows, and that he takes risks to sound different and choose an offbeat arrangement. And he has proved to be a superstar each and every time, with every song, and I know he will go on to do fabulous and great things in music...I will definitely be buying his album, seeing him in concert, and following his career! He reminds me of Chris Daughtry - my other Idol fav :-)

BFF Priya visits me in NYC!!!

So my best friend Priya visited me in New York a couple weeks ago. We BFF's had SUCH a blast together from walking, shopping, and eating chocolate on 5th Avenue to going to her friend's NYU film screening to eating all the time at all times of the day and night to having coffee at cute cafes to taking the subway to hanging out at fun clubs and lounges and dancing the night away to late night chats with champagne to shopping in Soho to being a tourist in Little Italy and drinking Boba tea as well as more shopping in Chinatown. It was very spontaneous - she booked her flight on Tuesday and flew out Wednesday morning from San Francisco to New York. We had a fabulous 4 days together :-) I've been here less than two months and 3 friends and lots of family have visited me from out of town, including BFF Priya and my parents this past week, and more are coming from Europe and other parts of the US - later this summer, so if you come visit me too, we shall have a blast! They are proof of that :-) This really is the greatest city! woohoo!!

Hi y'all,
As I close my suitcases and put my bags in the car, I send you this email before leaving for the airport.
I am moving to New York City, my biggest dream since I was 16, and I'm now I'm finally making it come true.
So much is going through my mind, so much excitement and anxiety, but one thought really stands out that I want to share with you, about risks. And a quote at the bottom that sums it all up, and one we should all follow for life :-)

Someone I love recently asked me if i am someone who takes risks, or who will start taking risks. I wasn't sure at the time, but now i've realized, the answer is yes. And i think a lot of it comes from moving so much, different cities, states, houses, and schools, having to be brave, start over, meet new people, make new friends, over and over, my entire life thus far.
Until college, it was out of my control, due to my Dad's job transfers, but post college, it has been due to my choice to travel and live in cities I have always wanted to live in, follow my dreams, achieve my goals, etc.

And now I am leaving the comfort and stability of my friends and family in CA, to move 3000 miles to NY, by myself, without a secured job or finalized apt, and doing everything on my own, with my goal and dream to live in Manhattan, and support myself 100%
that is a risk

and this quote motivates me to always take risks:

tragedy continues

After I sent out my email about the tragedy with my Uncle, as well as the drug reaction I had, I started hearing back from other people who knew of similar situations, just as horrible and tragic, like perfectly healthy people who mixed medications without knowing, and went into a coma and died.
JUST CRAZYYYY!!!!

and read to inform yourself

do not blindly trust your doctor!!!!

tragedy - everyone be careful

*I'm writing this so that you and your loved ones can avoid being in a similar helpless situation, and possibly save yours or someone else's life. Be VERY careful of what medications you are being prescribed, whether you are taking one, or more than one*

Some doctors don't pay attention to drug interactions, or don't pay attention to signs of a reaction from mixing/taking multiple medications. As in the case of my Uncle, he was prescribed more than one medication, and the doctor even saw signs of a reaction and ignored them, and my Uncle passed away today :-(
I'm more angry than anything. This is so unnecessary and it takes peoples lives more than we realize.

DON'T MIX MEDICATIONS unless you know what you are taking - and even if your doctor seems to know what they are talking about, READ online about it, and you will be amazed to find people in similar situations, and people whose lives have been ruined by medication(s).

I recently took an antibiotic for a sinus infection (and I couldn't even finish the course of Rx cause I couldn't function due to side effects - I am allergic to the medicine now) and now weeks later, it has completely wrecked my body and I am still recovering from the long term side effects. When I read up online about it, I found out that people who had taken this drug had suffered serious neurological damage, and other problems. I read like 500 testimonies- all negative.

So before you take anything, no matter how fabulous you think doctor is, read up on it, esp if you are taking more than one medication. Don't be a victim, in a big or small way, from the health care system that pumps us full of drugs without knowing the reactions and interactions. By default, "okay lets try this drug." Avoid it if you can.

P.S. If you can, natural meds are the way to go.

exciting news

My friend got into Harvard for grad school (although she may choose to go to UCLA :-) and my other friend is marrying her college sweetheart in Florence, Italy, where they first started dating :-)

So happy for wonderful life news!

Airlines ~ Pack Less or Pay More

A growing number of fliers are finding there's a price to pay for checking bags. Airlines are charging for bags that once were free to check and raising prices for fliers with lots of luggage, overweight bags and oversized bags. In May, United Airlines will become the first of the big traditional U.S. carriers to switch from two free checked bags to one. Last month, Southwest Airlines and ATA Airlines switched from three free checked bags to two.

Beginning May 5, United will charge passengers with non-refundable tickets on domestic flights $25 for a second checked bag and $100 per bag for a third, fourth and fifth checked bag. United now charges $85 for a third checked bag, the highest rate of any airline. Not all United fliers will pay for a second bag. Passengers flying in first or business class and those who have elite status in United's frequent-flier program or its Star Alliance partner program will not be charged.

Also on May 5, the airline will increase its overweight-bag rate (for bags weighing more than 50 pounds) from $50 to $100.
United says that one of every four passengers checks a second bag.
Most of the cost savings will come from burning less fuel because of fewer bags and reduced weight in the cargo hold.

We have a lot of love in our lives within many different relationships.
The love from friends, family, teachers, mentors, romantic, and more.
So just because you do not have one of these, does not mean you don't have love or aren't loved. Just having one person, one loving relationship, whatever type of relationship may be, is a lot. Just one.

New Years in Tahoe!

We booked our hotel for New Years in South Lake Tahoe!
It has a heated pool, hot tub, and sauna, and views of the frozen Lake!

It's going to be about 15 degrees in Tahoe hahhahah
We'll definitely be snowboarding with goggles so we can see through the snow!
I need to go shopping for ski/snowboarding gear!

SOOO on Greys Anatomy last night......
There is this one part in the OR (operating room for those of you who dont watch medical dramas or comedies) where the nurse needs to fix this computer thing cause the monitor went off, and Dr. Shephard (Patrick Dempsey) is inside the girls brain using a scope, and they need the monitor back to see, cause they can't just pull the scope out blindly cause it will damage brain tissue, and they are in the middle of her tumor or something.
So the nurse looks at the computer, and tells him that she took 3 semesters of computer science before she transferred to nursing, and can probably fix it or at least try to.
So Patrick Dempsey/Mc "Dreamy" asks her : "3 semesters of computer science - what college did you go to"
and she says "Santa Cruz"
and then he says "That's a party school"
and she's like "Are you going to insult my education or let me help you save your patient"
and then he looks around the room at the other doctors, nurses, etc, and he's like "Can anyone do better than 3 semesters of computer science from Santa Cruz?"
and no one responds, so he's like, "okay then, give it a shot"
and she says "I appreciate the vote of confidence"

Spice Girls concert & NSSN

OMG! I am going to the Spice Girls Farewell Tour concert on Dec 4th here in San Jose! My ticket is $120, but it's so worth it! I've been listening to them since I was like 12! And it's their last tour, so YAYYYY!!! Going with my friend from college, and we are going to dress up like one of the Spice Girls and go together! YAYAYAYAY SOOO EXCITED!!!!

And then 3 days later on Dec 7th, Not So Silent Night in San Francisco!!!!!

thoughts on being active & playing sports

In the upcoming weeks, I'm starting rock climbing at an indoor gym (at least more often than the one time I did it), go bowling (possibly on a weekly basis as my BFF wants to start a bowling club! How fun!), ice skating (more so during the Xmas holidays, but anytime is always good! I started when I took lessons in Boston when I was 3 or 4 years old), and then snowboarding for New Years in Tahoe! (that will be the second time attempting that after doing it with my dearest friend in Ohio two years ago ;-)
I'm also buying a punching bag, trampoline, and jump rope. This is so fun! I love doing new things to stay & be active, and love trying, playing, & experiencing new sports, preferably playing, but also watching as well :-) Football and hockey are my favorites to watch on TV but I love live sports games even more. And then to play, I alternate on a pretty regular basis between machines at the gym, swimming, and running in the gym or outdoors. I LOVE trying new sports, especially outdoors, so that is why I am really excited about going bowling, ice skating, rock climbing, and snowboarding in the next few weeks, even though I've done them all before. So for other sports I haven't tried before, I'm ready to try new ones! So bring it on!

Veteran Portland indie-rock band Modest Mouse will top the bill at this year's addition of Live 105's Not So Silent Night , the radio station announced today. Also appearing Dec. 7 at the Bill Graham Civic Auditorium in San Francisco will be Jimmy Eat World, Angels & Airwaves, Spoon, Paramore and the winner of the local band competition. Tickets for $39.50 go on sale at 10 a.m. Sunday at www.ticketmaster.com and all Ticketmaster outlets. A "very limited" amount of Bud Light Almost All Access Passes, which include early entrance, a reserved seat and free food, will be available for $105.

The third time proves to be the charm for Modest Mouse, who move to the headlining slot after two previous appearances further down the bill at the station's annual holiday event. The other bands are all making their first visits to NSSN. Modest Mouse and Spoon both already have performed multiple times in the Bay Area this year, including in September at the inaugural Treasure Island Music Festival. This will be Jimmy Eat World's first major performance in the area since the release of the new "Chase This Light," following a short set for Live 105 last month in front of about 100 fans at San Jose's Blank Club. Angels & Airwaves, featuring ex-Blink 182 lead singer Tom DeLonge, will be making its first Bay Area appearance this year, riding high on the success of its current single "Everything's Magic." Paramore, whose current hit single is "Misery Business," is performing a sold-out show at the Warfield on Thursday. Live 105 Activists (and you know who you are) can purchase tickets in advance from 10 a.m. Thursday to 5 p.m. Friday at www.live105.com.

Moving to New York City :-)

So, I've moved out of SF, and am home for a few months at my parents. But I am no longer moving to LA. I am moving to New York City :-) LA was the right decision for me out of the options I was giving myself. But my #1 option since I was 16 has been NYC.

My NY decision:
I've wanted to live in NY since I was 16. It's always been "too far, too big a jump, too hard, too scary" and I'm no longer going to let that stop me from going.
LA was the best decision for me out of the options I was giving myself. But the NY option, my more passionate option, was always sitting on the backburner, And it's time to make that dream a reality. I may go to LA one day, but I'm not thinking about that right now. Right now, I want to live in NY. It's the best time in my life for me to do that. I'm young, single, and I'll do plenty of film there. Sure it's nothing compared to film in LA, but I'd rather live in Manhattan and do film 50% of the time than live in LA and do film 100% of the time. Plus, LA is so spread out that people dont drive to see each other after they've been commuting daily for work. People stay in their areas (ex: you live in Santa Monica, you hang out in Santa Monica). I know this from friends who live there. It's not like the bay area where people drive all over to meet up. I want to be in a city where you can take the subway and cover Manhattan in what, 30mins? Definitely not 2 hours of LA traffic. I want to be surrounded by tons of people and where the city is alive, not so spread out by highways like LA.
NY is what I want right now in my life. If it changes in a few years, I'll go to LA. The thing is, there are two cities for film, LA and NY. And I loved living in SF, which is just like NY, except NY is 10 times bigger. But the way SF is set up, 7x7, the city is alive, the type of people, and people are everywhere, and I love that. I like a lot of people together in a small physical area but in a big city.
And also I realized, once you live on your own anywhere, like I did in SF, living with roommates, learning to pay bills, how to be and do things on my own, etc, and now i'm prepared to live anywhere. Once you've lived on your own and can do it, then it prepares you for any city. And sure I may hate NY, so then I'll come back to SF or LA. Probably LA cause of film. But it's like, what's the worst that could happen? I hate NY, I'll go to LA. If I love NY, I'll stay there. But if I dont go, I'll always regret it. Always wonder. What if. What would it have been like. What could have happened. What if I loved it so much and wanted to settle there. And right now is the best time and point in my life to go. And so I am! I’m a tough girl. I can do it!

Halloween party & deer on the highway

So last night, we were driving back from our friend's Halloween party at his apt in Emeryville. Three of my friends and I dressed up as the four Zodiac elements - we each represented our own sign's element, so I was water as I am a Pisces. On the way home, I was driving on highway 280 with two of my friends in the car. It was about 5am. At one point, I put the highbeams on because the highway was really dark and there were no other cars on the road. All of a sudden, I saw something up ahead, partly in our lane. It was a deer! I swerved around it, into the other lane. Half an hour later, I was still in shock and thanking God that I was awake and alert enough to swerve around the deer, chillin halfway in our lane on the highway at 5am! We were near woods so probably why the deer was there, but not sure why it was crossing the highway. All I know is that our car would have been totaled, and I don't know what condition the three of us would have been in. I know other people who have hit deer before and their car was totaled. And I am not sure if they were driving the 80mph that I was driving.
I am SO thankful that I am alive! And that our car is in one piece too!!! Phew!!!

The Internet Movie Database (IMDB) is the biggest entertainment database in existence. It has info on anyone and anything in the entertainment industry. For as long as I can remember, I've been researching that site for film classes, papers, and mostly personal interest. My first goal and dream on my road to Hollywood fame and fortune was to be credited and get my own page. That gets you on the industry radar, and makes you legitimate. And now, after working on a few film sets, my first credit has been posted! It's my first stepping stone, and just the beginning of so much more to come! I am ECSTATIC!!!

the hardest thing

I think that when we are living and working somewhere, it's hard at first, as beginnings always are, scary, hard, but then we get used to it. It becomes a routine, and something familiar. Then soon we are liking it, even loving it - work, roommates, house, city, so then when deciding to move or take a new job or be in a new city, that is another new beginning, and again, it is hard, scary, and I think that is what I am feeling right now. The sense of being comfortable and liking where I am, the city, my roommates, my coworkers, my friends, my job, and moving to LA, a new city with new roommates and friends and work, it's scary, and it's making me nervous, anxious, and a little stressed.

I think it comes down to, when we are to deviate from what we are comfortable with, take a big step out of our comfort zone, take a risk, a leap, a chance, it is scary. It is nervewracking. It makes me anxious, and stressed. But I made this decision over the course of a few months, and sat on the decision for weeks before making it final. And I feel happier and more excited each day that it gets closer to that decision to take place, but at the same time, as the time approaches to leave my comfort zone in SF, it is also scary and stressful. But I made the decision, and I am sticking to it because I know I made the right now, and while it's hard now to leave what I know, love, and am comfortable with, it would be even harder to do that months or years from now when I am even more deep rooted here with work, home, friends, roommates, etc. And my LA decision is one that will be the best for me long term on all levels and areas, esp work.

At least I recognize that the hardest thing is to break away from what we are most comfortable with, and often times, we give up what we want to really do because it's scary, and we'd rather do what we are comfortable doing, being, living, etc.

It's sink or swim time. And I plan to swim. All the way.
