Lots of ups and downs this weekend, starting with a rude
overcharging ($) airline (#spiritairlines
#worstairlineever) who sent our bag to another
city, while I flew to Myrtle Beach to attend my cousin-brother's wedding with
absolutely nothing except my purse. Talk about #improvising.
After a very long 24 hours, we finally got the bag back, and now I am filing a
claim to hold the airline responsible for everything we went through, from
emotional to physical to financial (had to shop the day of the wedding). But I
saw my cousin-brother get married, hung out and danced with 200 of my family
and friends, and my fiance met everyone, and we had a blast, so all in all, a
fabulous weekend Oh and I got my hair done at a salon and pretty much fell in
love #weddinghairtrials — in Myrtle Beach, SC.

My favorite and best encounter with a stranger
Sometimes,
something so simple, during a few minutes of our day, can be truly life
changing.
It
was 2008 and I had been in New York for just a few months. I was on the 7
train, going between Times Square and Grand Central. I was sitting on the
train, and a family of four got on the train. Parents, a son and a daughter.
The moment they walked on, it was evident that the daughter was physically
handicapped. I immediately stood up to offer my seat, but so did the man next
to me, who was closer in proximity to the family, so the daughter sat in his
seat. I motioned to the mother if she wanted my seat, but she kindly waved
toward me “no no I’m fine.” So I sat back down. The mother stood with her
husband and son. I had my headphones on, but could see the girl looking up at
me from her seat next to me. She couldn’t have been more than 8 or 9. I smiled
while listening to my headphones, knowing she was looking at me.
Then
I saw her say something, but couldn’t hear it, so I took my headphones off,
kindly smiled and brought my head down closer to her eye level, and said
smiling “Hmmm what did you say?” And she said, “Are you going?” I could tell
from her speech that she was also mentally handicapped. I had no idea what she
was asking or saying, so I just said “Yes I am going. Are you going?”, continually
smiling at her. She became happy and shifted in her seat excitedly. “Yes I am
going.” We sat smiling for a moment, and I asked her “Are you visiting New York
– where are you from?” And she smilingly looked toward her mother, who mouthed
“Louisiana.” And the girl repeated it back to me happily. I said “Ohhh that’s
nice to visit New York on vacation.” We sat in silence for another 30 seconds,
I kept my headphones off and kept smiling at her, and as the train pulled into
the station where I was getting off, I said “Well this is my stop so I need to
go, but you enjoy New York” and I just lightly tapped the baseball cap she was
wearing, and she happily smiled and waved as I got up to leave. As I left the
train, her mother touched my shoulder and said, “God bless you.” And I
immediately said “oh no no” and exited the train.
I
thought to myself what this family, especially the mother must have faced in
her life, having a handicapped daughter, and how people must have talked to
her, treated her, as well as the mother, to a point where just a little
kindness and smile from a stranger in New York made her so thankful and happy
to bless me. I felt truly blessed, to have both met that girl and her mother,
and just thankful for all that I had in my life, and just said a prayer for her
and her family. God bless them.

We are all misfits, living in a world on fire
You've just gotta turn it up loud when the flames get higher
Sing it for the people like us, the people like us
People like us we've gotta stick together
Keep your head up nothing lasts forever
They can't do nothing to you, they can't do nothing to me
This is the life that we choose, this is the life that we bleed
So throw your fists in the air, come out, come out if you dare
Tonight we're gonna change forever

HUGE news - good day for equal rights / right to choose for all!!!!!!!!!
DOMA is dead!!!!
Prop 8 not going to the Supreme Court!!!!!!!!!
Texas Abortion Bill is dead!!!!!!!!!
http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2013/06/26/supreme-court-doma-decision_n_3454811.html
In a landmark decision for gay rights, a divided Supreme Court Wednesday struck down the federal Defense of Marriage Act as unconstitutional, NBC News reported. The law has blocked the federal government from recognizing same-sex marriages in the states where they are legal. Same-sex marriage is legal in 12 states and Washington, D.C. The decision was 5-4, written by Justice Anthony Kennedy. The court also cleared the way for same-sex marriage to resume in California in a separate decision. The court said it could not take up a challenge to California's Propostion 8, the voter-approved ban on gay marriage passed in 2008.

The U.S. Supreme Court decided Wednesday it will not take up a challenge to California's voter-approved Prop 8 -- a ban on same-sex marriage that landed before the Justices after years of legal battles. The ruling states the people who brought this case -- Prop 8 supporters -- had no legal standing to bring the case to the Supreme Court. The decision likely means same-sex marriage can resume in California. The Court decided Prop 8 backers lacked standing under federal law to appeal the case, effectively leaving an earlier ruling that Prop 8 is unconstitutional in place. The decision vacates the Ninth Circuit Court's ruling and upholds Judge Vaughn Walker's ruling that Prop 8 is unconstitutional. Another same-sex marriage case before the court was struck down Wednesday when the Supreme Court ruled unconstitutional the federal Defense of Marriage Act. The 5-4 landmark ruling strikes down the law, which blocks the federal government from recognizing same-sex marriages in the states where they are legal. The DOMA decision, written by Justice Anthony Kennedy, stated: "DOMA instructs all federal officials, and indeed all persons with whom same-sex couples interact, including their own children, that their marriage is less worthy than the marriages of others."

The Texas anti-abortion bill, which threatened to close nearly all of the abortion clinics in the state and prompted an 11-hour filibuster by state Sen. Wendy Davis (D), is dead, The Austin American-Statesman reported. Lawmakers had to vote on Senate Bill 5 before the special session's end at 12 a.m. local time. However, more than 400 protesters halted the proceedings 15 minutes before the roll call could be completed with what they called "a people's filibuster," The Associated Press reported. The crowd of demonstrators in the capitol cried "Shame! Shame!" when Davis' filibuster was halted by Lt. Gov. David Dewhurst, who ruled that her discussion of mandatory ultrasound testing was off-topic. Then the protesters roared after state Sen. Leticia Van De Putte asked, "At what point must a female senator raise her hand or her voice to be recognized over her male colleagues?” Their cries continued to echo inside the chamber -- and over a livestream watched by thousands around the world -- until after the midnight deadline passed. Although some Republican lawmakers later claimed the bill had passed in time, Democrats denied that the vote was completed before the clock ran out on the session. A time stamp showing the vote completed after midnight was the deciding factor. “This will not become law,” Sen. John Whitmire (D), told The Austin American-Statesman. In response, the crowd of protesters gathered in the capitol cheered and began singing "The Eyes Of Texas," the alma mater of the University of Texas at Austin.

Happy Holi!!!!!!
Happy Holi to our family and friends!!!!!! :-)
For those who do not know, Holi is the Festival of Colors in India. You drench everyone in colored water and throw colored powders on each other. Colors of Joy. It is celebrated as harvest festival as well as welcome-festival for the spring season in India. It is one occasion when sprinkling colored powder ('gulal') or colored water on each other breaks all barriers of discrimination so that everyone looks the same and universal brotherhood is reaffirmed.
Happy Holi to you and yours!!!!!!!! :-)
Love and hugs,
Anisha and Mohit

A Change is Needed
Just
heartbreaking. Such disgrace, ignorance, pain, suffering, and
shattering. The worst has happened, but now hopefully it will change a
nation - and the mentality of people - for the better.
Fight for change. Fight for respect. Fight fo r equality. Fight for justice. Stand up for all that you believe. I hope and wish to see an equal world, with more understanding human beings.
She fought for her life, but lost. We should fight for justice and change, in her bravery, courage, and willpower to live beyond all of this, in spirit, to invoke change in India.
And all over the world. Global awareness and change is needed.

Obama wins a second term as U.S. president
A sharply divided America awarded President Barack Obama a second term Tuesday, choosing him over Republican Mitt Romney to lead the repair of an economy that by far remains the country’s biggest concern, the Washington Post projects.
The president was poised to narrowly win several tight races in a handful of battleground states. It was the culmination of a staggeringly expensive, extremely close and sometimes bitter contest far removed from Obama’s 2008 message of hope and change.
Democrats also held onto their majority in the Senate, picking up two seats in early returns with the possibility of a third.
In early results, Obama won his home state of Illinois as well as Massachusetts, where Romney was governor and the place he still calls home. Maryland and the District of Columbia were put in Obama’s column as soon as polls there closed.
After more than $2 billion in campaign spending, unprecedented hours of television ads and a record number of voters who cast their ballots before Tuesday, Election Day 2012 was told in timeless tableaus of lines outside schools, volunteers waving signs and Americans emerging with “I Voted” stickers attached to their jackets.

Earth show Hurricane Sandy bearing down on the East Coast, highlighting
the storm's enormous size.
NASA's Earth Observatory
has released time-lapse animation of the powerful hurricane from a
satellite 22,300 miles above ground. The images reveal details of
Sandy's motion and eye wall.
Hurricane Sandy was shown
approximately 275 miles south-southeast of Cape Hatteras, N.C., and
moving northeast at 14 mph during the time of the photographs. NASA
notes that the structures of the clouds are highlighted by the changing
angles of the sun.
The animation was created from
photos taken every minute from 7:15 a.m. to 6:26 p.m. ET on Sunday. More
images can be viewed at the Earth Observatory site.
The immense storm has prompted emergency evacuations, closed offices and delayed flights along the East Coast.

New dream job!
I wanted to share the amazingly great
news that I got a new job, in my field of healthcare management - my
first job as a manager - at the number one ranked medical center in the
country.
I am an Administrative Manager at Columbia University Medical Center :-) It has been about three weeks now, and I continue to learn so much on a daily basis, while working hard in my department, and staying very busy :-) It has been a long road and a lot of hard work, both with my MBA, and job applications, to finally reach this stage, which is like a dream come true for me :-)
I am working with incredible people and knowledgeable staff at one of the top medical institutions in the country. A place where lives are changed on a daily basis. I am continuing my passion for health care and helping others. A position, company and opportunity that really supports and ties in with my MBA in Health Services Management, and takes my job to a new level, and career to new heights. I am thankful and humbled.

No fear. New job!
Sometimes we let fear get the better of us, but if we don't take risks
or chances or incredible opportunities in front of us, then how will we
move forward, do amazing things, live a great life and help change the
world. I received an incredible job opportunity, in line with my MBA, at
one of the top medical institution's in the country. I was scared to
resign at my current job, nervous at the reaction,
but I did it, and I am so glad I did, because I have to move forward,
take risks and embrace new opportunities. Because I want to grow in my
field of health care management, help others, promote positive change,
and that will contribute to my part of helping to change the world.
